Gordon Cates is a Professor of Physics and Radiology. He first came to UVa during the summer of 2000 after
teaching at Princeton for roughly 12 years where he did research in atomic and nuclear physics, and
taught a variety of undergraduate courses.
The idea behind "Energy on this world and elsewhere" was first developed as a theme for a physics-for-poets class. Later it was the basis of a freshman seminar, and most recently, was a course at UVa for the first time during the fall of 2001. After receiving an enthusiastic reception during its first year, "Energy" was proposed and approved as a regular course for the fall of 2002. |  |
