Policy for Absence and Tardiness
Absences and tardiness are disruptive to your colleagues' and your ability to learn and perform throughout the semester. A penalty structure will be implemented to encourage you to arrive on time and keep up with your lab reports.
Absences
- An absence will be excused only for bona fide reasons such as illness, a death in the family, and University-sponsored trips. Without a legitimate excuse, absentees will receive a grade of zero (0) for the missed lab.
- To be excused for an absence, you must submit a written excuse petition to your lab instructor (TA). Please submit the petition in advance (like by email), if possible, and by no means later than the next scheduled lab period.
- Because time and space are limited, no make-up lab sessions are scheduled. If you miss a lab, you will need to make special arrangements through your lab instructor -- usually in one of the instructor's other sections in the same week. It becomes increasingly difficult to make it up in the following week and this is not guaranteed, so make every effort to complete your work as soon as possible.
Tardiness in Arrival for Lab
- After a 10-minute initial grace period, the lab instructors will deduct one (1) point from your grade for each successive full or partial 15 minute segment of tardiness.
Tardiness in Submission of Lab Reports
- Your lab report (including your copy of the journal) is due at the beginning of the following regularly scheduled lab period. After that, one (1) point will be deducted from the report for each day it is late.
