- Review of quantum mechanics. Eigenstates and eigenvalues.
- Particle in a well, harmonic oscillator, hydrogen atom.
- Quantum theory of atoms, molecules, liquids, and solids.
- Electrical conductivities of metals, superconductors,
semiconductors, and insulators.
- Carrier density. Photoconductivity; xerographic copiers and laser printers.
- Semiconductor physics. The p - n junction. Diodes and transistors.
Transistors as amplifiers.
- Review of magnetism. Magnets, magnetic levitation, tape recorders.
- Information storage. Magnetic media. Compact disks.
- Communications technology (6 lectures).
- Review of Maxwell's equations.
- Production and reception of electromagnetic waves. Radiation, dipole
antennas.
- Transmission of information. Fourier analysis.
- Atmospheric effects. EM waves in plasmas. The ionosphere.
- Television and radio, radar.
- Communications satellites. Global Positioning System.
- Nuclear physics and energy (8 lectures).
- Nuclear structure. Conservation laws. Liquid drop model. Nuclear
reactions.
- The Big Bang. Nucleosynthesis. Origin and abundance of the elements.
- Stellar evolution.
- Nuclear reactors. Neutron moderation. Fission versus fusion.
- Nuclear medicine.
- Medical imaging (6 lectures).
- Xrays.
- Nuclear magnetic resonance.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
- Physics of lasers. Lasers in medicine.
