Midterm

The midterm is a ``mini-research'' report due on Tuesday, October 18th.

Research Guidelines

1) Your research will be based on the Particle Data Group website.

2) Choose on particle or one group of particles, and define its general fetures: is it a baryon, what is its charge, ... etc.

3) Explain the quantum numbers $I(J^P)$.

4) Derive the lifetime both in natural units and in (fractions of) seconds from the Breit-Wigner width, using the uncertainty principle.

5) There are a number of experiments listed for each particle: you can search the articles by typing the authors name and the year of publication in the SLAC SPIRES website.

6) Select one or two experiments based on the information they give (see PDG). What were the important results of the experiments? Were any of the quantum numbers, or properties of the particle under examination obtained in the experiments? Comment.
