Week 11 Assignment: Laboratories II

GOALS
  1. Help the student understand the role of experimentation in the study of physics.

Assignment 1 - due April 10, 2006 (5 am): Write a 400 word paper on how important you believe doing lab experiments is in high school physics. What percentage of time should laboratories consume? Give arguments. Upload this essay written in Word into HW20 of Open Portfolio.

  2. Have the student develop collaborative learning skills.

Assignment 2 - due April 11, 2006 (5 am): Write a 400 word paper on what you think is the best method of dividing a lab class into laboratory groups. Why do you think so? What other methods have you tried? What works and what doesn't work? Upload this essay written in Word into HW21 of Open Portfolio.

Assignment 3- due April 12, 2006 (5 am): Use the readings from this week, other sources you have, and your own experiences to write a complete unit on the harmonic oscillations of a mass on a spring. Include in this writeup what you will teach, demonstrations you may use, student lab, and what you expect the student lab report to look like. You might include at the beginning of this lab the concepts and skills you expect your students to already have prior to the lab (this, of course, will vary from teacher to teacher and class to class, so it is worthwhile for the reader of your lab unit to know this). Mention the level of physics course for which you think this lab is suitable. Include a rubric for grading this unit, including the lab. Note: this is a significant effort. Will your lab be cookbook or will it be inquiry based? Upload this project written in Word into HW22 of Open Portfolio. This is a significant project that contributes considerable weight towards your final grade.
