Summer Residence Program -NEW Information - See Below in Red
Each summer we offer an intensive 3-4 week workshop, in-residence at UVa, for teachers who want to be or already are high school physics teachers. There are additional course requirements at home afterward. The courses are required for those desiring our Master of Arts in Physics Education (MAPE) degree, but you do not have to be a MAPE candidate to take the courses. Different courses are offered in even and odd years (see the table below).
Physics 632(Lecture) and 636(Lab) will be offered this summer 2008. They are appropriate for teachers who want to be or already are high school physics teachers. A prior college level calculus course is recommended. The course dates this summer are July 7 - July 30, 2008. If you want to take both courses as most teachers do, you must apply ( for funding) and register( pay tuition). To be considered for a stipend and/or housing allowance, you must fill out the online Summer 632/636 application (or print out and mail it to the address shown on the application). In addition, you must also register (and pay course tuition) for the courses through the UVa School of Continuing and Professional Studies. For more information about the courses, please click on Physics 632 and Physics 636.
If you desire to take only one of the courses, please state your reasons on the application or send a separate email to PhysicsEducation@virginia.edu.We have just heard from SCHEV that our NCLB Grant to support K-12 professional development for teachers was not funded. This means we will not be able to provide teacher stipends for the summer program as well many other items that the grant normally covers like parking, computer paper, etc.. The good news is that we believe we are going to be able to gather together funds to pay for your summer housing which is almost $900 each. At this point we still hope to provide housing for the first 40 teachers who both submit a summer workshop application and register (and pay tuition) for both PHYS 632 and PHYS 636 by the deadline of 5 pm on June 2, 2008. We probably will not be able to provide any support for any teachers in excess of the first 40. If you do not stay in UVa housing, we will not be able to transfer to you as a stipend what we would have spent on housing. We have teaching space for up to 48 teachers. For details on housing please read further. Those of you who complete the application by June 2 will here back from us via email by June 5. For details on housing please read further.
Housing
Housing will be in the Faulkner Apartments within a walking distance of 10 -15 minutes from the Physics Building. There is some advantage to being with other participants in the apartments for peer help. We also have teaching assistant help in the apartments at night. Faulkner Apartments are air-conditioned suites with 4 separate bedrooms, kitchen area, living room area, and one bath area. You will be provided with economy service and more details on this can be found later. If you wish to cook in the kitchen, you have to bring your own cooking pots and pans and utensils. For details of the apartments, click on Faulkner Suites. Click on the lower right figure in the previous file to get the floor plan of the apartment. You will have access to a computer code to get into the computer room and to the internet connection. I strongly advise you to bring your laptop and use the internet connection in the apartment. It is a minimum charge. Coin operated laundry facilities and vending machines are all centrally located. For more details including the economy service, please click on housing and check-in procedures, but do not do this until June 2.

School System Support
We hope that most participants will be able to obtain some tuition support from your local school system. We do expect your school system to provide travel funds for you (if you live in Virginia) to attend the Virginia Instructor of Physics Demonstration session at the annual Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) conference held in Virginia each Fall.| Summer Year |
