Announcing the
Physics Department Art Contest
Looking for fame, fortune, and the
chance to have your name on a wall? You've come to the right
place!

The Mead Endowment of UVA is sponsoring a contest to provide an art
piece for the Physics building. Teams of one or more students are
invited to submit their ideas for a suitable project. The winning
team will have their project funded and will be awarded a $500
honorarium upon completion. The finished piece will be displayed
in the Physics building for all to admire.
We're looking for a piece that blends art and science. Some ideas
might include:
- holograms
- laser light displays
- kinetic or robotic sculptures
- pieces constructed from advanced materials (like amorphous steel
or carbon nanotubes)
- conventional media with a scientifically interesting subject
but don't feel limited by these suggestions. Be as creative as
you like, or let yourself be inspired by a piece you've seen.

Rules:
1. Proposals are due on Feb.
15. The proposal should consist of a description of the idea, a
rough sketch of the design, and an estimate of the costs.
Proposals should be submitted to Prof. Cass Sackett (sackett@virginia.edu, x4-6795)
in the Physics Department.
2. If you need help with
technical aspects of the project, feel free to contact Prof.
Sackett. Lots of technical resources and expertise are available
on campus, so you may be able to do a more complicated project
than you think.
3. Project budgets are
limited to $1500 or less. Depending on the
proposals received, we may try to fund two smaller projects instead of
one large one, so don't feel that you need to use the whole budget.
4. University of Virginia
undergraduate students, graduate students, and teams of both are
eligible for the contest.
5. Proposals will be
evaluated in terms of their artistic merit, technical feasibility, and
relevance to the theme of science in art. Also, some preference
will be given to teams including students from multiple
discliplines. The project should be of a relatively
permanent nature.
6. Teams should plan to
complete their projects by graduation
(May 22).
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Where will the project
be displayed?
A: Somewhere in the
Physics Building. The obvious locations are the two entry
vestibules from the McCormick Road facing. But if you think you
have a better place, include it in your proposal. Installing new
lighting and/or power at a location is not out of the question, but the
expense would need to come out of your budget.
Q: Can I design a project
for outside?
A: No. Restricting
the competition to indoors simplifies many logistical and
administrative issues.
