Rutherford Scattering: Thomson Model of an Atom

Michael Fowler, UVa

The blue circle represents a heavy sphere the size of an atom with positive charge uniformly distributed throughout. A steady rain of alpha particles (red circles) comes from a source on the left. They all have the same initial velocity, but enter at random points on the left-hand side. Atomic electrons would have negligible effect on the trajectories of the alpha particles.
