Desktop Computer Replacement Program for Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty
With funding from the Dean of Arts and Sciences, our
department has initiated a program that will allow us to provide each
of our tenured and tenure-track faculty members with a standard desktop
computer. More information about the program is given below.
The computers are available to tenured and tenure-track
faculty only. These faculty members need computers to perform their
assigned academic and administrative duties. Grant-funded computers
cannot be used for this, under the terms of the federal Cost Accounting
Standards (CAS).
You will be able to choose one of three computer configurations:

If you choose to accept one of these standard computers,
you must agree to the terms and conditions spelled out in our new
"Tenured/Tenure-Track Desktop Computer Support Policy". This policy
makes some long-needed changes in our department's computer support
philosphy. In particular, only two types of computer support will be
available for your academic and administrative computing needs:
Option 1:
You may choose to accept a computer like those described
above. Under this option, your desktop computer and support
for your academic and administrative computing needs will be
provided at no charge.
Option 2:
If you do not choose to accept one of these computers,
the time and materials necessary to support your academic and
administrative computing needs will be charged to your
overhead account (or another eligible funding source) after
the standard computers have been deployed.
The new computer support policy for tenured/tenure-track faculty desktop
computers is given here:
http://galileo.phys.virginia.edu/compfac/policy/CSP.100-2006.1.3.html
The three computer configurations above correspond to the
standard computers described in section II(A) of the policy.
If you do not choose to accept such a computer, your desktop
computer will be covered by section III of the policy ("Alternative
Computers and Services").
We believe that these new standardized computers will help
us improve the quality of our computer support. We hope all
eligible faculty will take advantage of this opportunity.
