Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to send out the 2nd Circular for the 18th International Spin Physics Symposium (SPIN2008) to be held October 6 - 11, 2008 at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. The Symposium is open to all bona fide scientists regardless of citizenship or national origin. SPIN2008 combines the High Energy Spin Symposia and the Nuclear Polarization Conferences so that all topics relevant to spin physics in nuclear and low to high energy reactions and associated fields will be included in the Symposium program. The two previous Symposia in this series were held at Kyoto, Japan (October, 2006) and Trieste, Italy (October, 2004). REGISTRATION Registration for SPIN2008 is now open. Please go to the SPIN2008 Web page http://faculty.virginia.edu/spin2008/ and click on the 'Registration' link and follow the instructions. The University Conference Services will handle all registration details. When registering you will have the opportunity to pay for the excursion of choice for yourself and any accompanying persons and buy Conference Dinner tickets for those accompanying persons.

The Registration Fees are as follows:

Regular:....$400, After Aug. 31st, 2008.......$450

Student.....$200, No Late fee

Online Registration by Credit Card only

On request, you may register and defer payment until the Symposium

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

The Scientific Program of the Symposium will include Plenary and Parallel Session and possibly a Poster Session. There will be invited lead-off speakers for each Parallel Session topic.
Abstracts can now be submitted for any spin topic covered in the Symposium (listed below). For submission details, go to the Website and follow the instructions. The deadline is August 1, 2008.

8) Acceleration, Storage and Polarimetry of Polarized Beams
9) Polarized Ion Sources and Targets
10) Polarized Electron and Positron Sources and Polarimeters
11)Future Facilities and Experiments
12) Associated Technology

The Plenary Session program is complete and posted; the Parallel Sessions will be developed by their convenors once contributed abstracts have been received. You are encouraged to submit abstracts by clicking on the corresponding link on the web site and following the instructions. The final date for submission of Abstracts is August 1st, 2008. Abstracts can be submitted after this date but may not be considered for an oral presentation in the program. We particularly encourage graduate students and other young physicists to submit abstracts.

Connected to the Spin Symposium will be a workshop on Sources of Polarized Electrons and High Brightness Electron Beams (PESP2008) to be held at JLab in the week prior to the Symposium, October 1 - 4. Separate registration is necessary for the workshop. For details go to http://conferences.jlab.org/PESP2008/.

Jefferson Laboratory is located in Newport News, Virginia, about 140 miles from Charlottesville. For those who wish to attend the Workshop and the Symposium, transportation between the two sites can be arranged.

ORGANIZATION and SPONSORSHIP

The Symposium will take place at Newcomb Hall, which is also the Student Activity Center, at the University of Virginia. An interactive map of the University can be found at the University web site. Maps and other information are to be found on the Symposium Website. All sessions will all take place in Newcomb Hall.

No special computer facilities will be provided but there are 5 computer kiosks in the building which can be used. For those with laptops we are expecting to set up a temporary wireless link just for attendees for the period of the Symposium.

The Chair for the Symposium is D. G. Crabb of the University of Virginia. The members of the International Spin Committee and Local Organizing Committee are listed at the end of this e-mail.

SPIN2008 is an International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) sponsored event. In accordance with IUPAP principles IUPAP regarding the free circulation of scientists for international purposes, no bona fide scientist will be excluded from participation on the grounds of national origin, nationality or other considerations unrelated to science.

The other sponsors include; Brookhaven National Laboratory, Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics at the University of Virginia,the International Spin Physics Committee, Jefferson Laboratory, RIKEN BNL Research Center and the University of Virginia.

We encourage participation at the Symposium by students and have reduced the Registration fee for that purpose. In addition we have some funds to support participants from developing countries and for those who would not normally be able to attend for financial reasons. Priority will be given to younger physicists and those who submit a valid abstract. Typically the support will be for local expenses. To apply for such funding, please submit a request to uvaspin08@virginia.edu with "Support Request" as the subject line, and your name (LAST NAME, First Name) Institution, Nationality and a brief statement of justification for support, in the body of the e-mail. The deadline for requests is August 1st and you will be informed of the level of support by August. 31st.


PROCEEDINGS

The Proceedings of the Symposium will be published by the American Institute of Physics with both a print version and on-line version being available to Symposium participants. The on-line access will be available up to two years from the date of publication. In the interest of a timely publication we ask that all manuscripts be submitted along with a copyright release form before December 1st, 2008. The proceedings will be in the AIP 6 x 9 format. ACCOMMODATIONS

The Hotels for which there are special conference rates are listed on the Web site. Attendees should make their own reservations by contacting the hotel as suggested in the list and mentioning "SPIN2008". We strongly encourage participants to make their reservations before the cut-off date specified, as there will be a (American) football game taking place at the University on Saturday, October 11th. After the cut-off date it will be very difficult to find accommodation, particularly towards the end of the week. For those staying in W. Main St. hotels, there is a free trolley bus which loops around the university grounds and which has convenient stops for Newcomb Hall. Details are available at http://www.charlottesville.org

TRAVEL

Charlottesville (CHO) has a small airport, serving several major airlines with direct connections to larger cities with international airports, including Washington DC (IAD). Other airports in the region are Washington National (DCA) and Richmond (RIC). Ground transportation from the Washington airports and Richmond is not easy and so as an experiment a blog http://spin08.blogspot.com has been set up to enable people to ride share or van pool by posting arrival information on the blog. It is also linked through the symposium web site. There are three main parking areas for those who have cars: the closest is the Central Grounds lot, under the bookstore across the plaza from Newcomb Hall. Current charge is $1.80/hr. We are still negotiating and further information will be posted on the website and in the 3rd circular.

VISA

Participants from certain countries will need a visa to enter the USA: Guidelines for US Visa applications can be found at the US State Department web site . We urge these participants to begin the process of obtaining any required visa as soon as possible. We will provide a Letter of Invitation to the Symposium for those who request them. If you need a letter validating your travel to the Symposium we will also provide one on request.


SOCIAL PROGRAM

There will be a welcoming reception on Sunday evening, October 5th in Newcomb Hall. The Symposium banquet will take place on Thursday evening at the Omni Hotel. Payment for accompanying guests can be made through the Registration site. Wednesday afternoon will be set aside for excursions and personal activities. Selection and payment for the excursions can be made at the time of Registration.
